Office Culture

Our people share a common vision—they are committed to excellence in the practice of architecture. To achieve this goal, Bowie Gridley Architects provides challenging opportunities as well as a creative, fulfilling and supportive work environment. Our talented staff enjoys a relaxed atmosphere in an open studio setting overlooking the Potomac River in historic Georgetown.

Bowie Gridley Architects is a terrific place for those with initiative and creativity who work well in teams. The architectural studio is organized into project teams with the goal of assigning staff members to projects long-term. A Project Manager heads each team and provides leadership, focus and extensive technical expertise. Depending on the project size and schedule, project teams vary from three to eight individuals. Smaller projects often give young Architects an opportunity to work directly with clients in concert with one of our Principals.

Project types include athletic and fitness centers, academic centers, dormitories, performing arts centers, libraries, offices for commercial or institutional clients, and a limited number of residential projects. Master planning is an important part of our practice as well, and has included projects from San Francisco, California to Houston, Texas to London, England.

Professional Growth

Bowie Gridley Architects encourages the professional development of individuals by providing in-house continuing education seminars, mentoring and goal-oriented reviews. Many of our in-house seminars qualify for AIA Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for AIA members. Mentorship ensures that intern architects are exposed to all design phases in their work and assists in achieving IDP requirements. We also have a library of current preparation materials for the Architectural Registration Exam for use by our staff. The firm encourages architectural registration as well as membership in professional organizations such as the American Institute of Architects. The study of issues of sustainability is also important. Informal study groups form from time to time to study for the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Accreditation Exam.

The Social Aspect

The office enjoys a variety of social events from group lunches celebrating the closing of a design phase on a project to the festive annual holiday party and summertime barbeque. We celebrate creativity too, whether it is a slide show of trip pictures to some exotic locale or an occasional beer tasting orchestrated by our own master home-brewer, Bob. He recently won an award for his special label design, and to take a look, click here.

On a more serious side, we hold monthly events called Third Thursdays that serve as a forum for topics of interest. Examples include an update on the new DC Baseball Park Interiors project, and an in-house seminar on construction administration. We also organize product luncheons where staff can increase practical knowledge while also earning continuing education credits.
